Interview: DJ T on Fabric 51 and why he’s going back to his disco roots

DJ T’s Fabric 51 promo mix has been on repeat at the office for the last few days – seems last week, which was Maya Vanya week, has seemlessly blended into DJ T week. What better way to mark that occassion than with a chat to the man in question?

Check out our interview with DJ T after the jump!

DJ T – Fabric 51 – 30 Minute Promo Mix from fabric at Letsmix.com.

When you were asked to do a Fabric mix, what was your first reaction?
– My first thought was, that this was the perfect timing. I never felt better prepared for such a mix than in this moment, because the months before I had already collected hundreds of tracks and songs that I didn’t neccassarily needed for playing, but rather for listening oriented mixes and podcasts. The request came in on a Friday and on Monday the staff had a clearing-list of 60 tracks in their email. Guess that never happened to them before, ha ha! And I felt very honoured of course.

Did you approach this differently than you would when preparing tracks for a big gig?
– Fundamentally different. Less from a functional point of view but more from an emotional one.

What were the general vibe and idea you were aiming for in the mix?
– The main thing I wanted to transport was the emotional state I’d brought home from my last worldtour. I had played and stayed in sunny places like Brasil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Miami, Hawaii and Australia and the vibe of these weeks was still ruling my world. Further it was about a certain, very deep, musical vibe, somebody from the fabric staff called it “cinematic”, I actually liked that characterization. Stylewise its all about productions, that are very simple and reduced, so they let the main theme elements and vocals al lot of room to act.

You said somewhere that you’ve never put as many vocal tracks in a mix before. Was this intentional?
– It was just a natural consequence of the concept I just described. What is generally happening is, that currently my soul, funk and disco roots are breaking through very strong again and these references are not only appearing as moods or citings. I am really into full vocal songs in the moment.

Your Fabric mix has already been compared to Michael Mayer’s now classic Fabric 13. How does that feel? Was that particular mix an inspiration for you when doing this?
– Proud to hear that. It’s a long time ago that I heard Michael’s mix, but I can remember, that I liked it very much. If its compared, I guess its because it transports a similar feeling. But I actually didn’t take any other mixes as an inspiration.

The promo mix features an all-different track list than the album. But would you say it’s along the same lines sound and vibe wise?
– No, for the promo mix I wanted to make something different. Maybe the first tracks have a similar feeling, but all in all its something that could rather be played in a club than the fabric mix.

Mix of the day: DJ T Fabric 51 promo mix

djt

DJ T hardly needs an introduction, but just for the sake of it: Over the last 20 years Thomas Koch has launched the excellent Groove magazine, co-founded seminal label Get Physical and also co-founded the now legendary Monza club night on Ibiza. Add to this a production and DJ resume that would stand as pretty awesome by itself, and it’s obvious why DJ T is one of the most influential and respected people on today’s German electronic music scene.

DJ T’s first mix album for Fabric, Fabric 51, was released last week, joined by an excellent 30 minute promo mix occupying that melodic, minimally percussive ground between house and techno which has become DJ T’s trademark.

Check out the promo mix below – and buy the full release (featuring a whole different track selection) from Fabric here: http://www.fabriclondon.com/label/fabric/51/. Stay tuned for an interview with DJ T on his Fabric 51 mix.
