JBL and Roxy launch Next Girl DJ on Let’s mix

Next Girl DJ judge Anja Schneider.

Girls get ready! Today audio giants JBL and sportswear/lifestyle brand Roxy launch a new DJ competition on Let’s mix: Next Girl DJ. It’s a Pan-European contest that hopes top propel Europe’s best female DJ into dance music superstardom.

Next Girl DJ isn’t aiming to put girls in one corner of the playing field and guys in the other, but rather to provide a space where girls can showcase their skills. JBL and Roxy believe that more females are needed to exhibit their DJ talent in what is, obviously, still a male dominated environment.

Out of all the entering DJ:s, 16 will remain for the live finals, which will be decided in Paris, London, Berlin and Brussels throughout May. The winner of the Next Girl DJ contest gets a bunch of prizes: products from JBL and Roxy, track inclusion on Roxy’s 2010 Music CD, DJ spots and a festival date, and also an appearance on Mobilee Records founder Anja Schneider’s influential radio show Dance under the Blue Moon.

Anja Schneider is also one of the Next Girl DJ judges. In an interview on Beatportal the other day she elaborated on why a DJ competition just for girls is a good idea:

“I was really shocked to see so few female DJs featured in the annual Top 100 DJ chart in DJ Magazine this year, I think there were maybe 2 out of 100?”

“This is so crazy as I know that there are so many very talented women out there. I think some women are holding back too much and perhaps waiting for other people to push them, when really they should support each other and do it themselves.”

“I hope this competition will be a good incentive for them to get on with it and show the world what they can do!”

Mix of the day: Bjorn Sane’ Seasonal Winter Mix

Today’s staff favourite Bjorn Sane is mixing out of the small Dutch town of Zeewolde. Bjorn hit us up on Twitter yesterday (we love that!), and drew our attention to his minimally percussive and deeply sublime Winter seasonal tech house mix.

Go deep!

Mix of the day: Generic People on Big Daddy Can’s Radio Show

Generic People are, according to their Let’s mix profile, “party animals from Cork City in little old Ireland” who “party hard and perform far from ordinary DJ sets”. Their eclectic 10 minute radio mix featuring Daft Punk, KRS 1, Johnny Cash and some guy from, we think, Watford rambling all over the place has had us pumping and getting our party mood on the whole afternoon. Turns out those Generic People weren’t so generic after all.

All NGDJ finalist mixes now online

The NGDJ finals are heating up! All finalist mixes are now online, check them out here and have your say by rating and leaving comments on the mixes. A few of the DJ:s qualified for the finals didn’t meet the deadline, which enabled us to give out wildcards to their runner-ups in the qualification round. In the end, 98 DJ:s are entering the NGDJ finals.

The jury has already started looking over the mixes, a process that will continue over the weekend. Stay tuned, only a week to go until the first ever NGDJ is finally revealed.
